Columbus tap water is hard, and that means mineral deposits. When water evaporates, it leaves behind calcium and lime — the white, chalky spots on faucets, the cloudy film on shower doors, and the crusty ring around the sink drain. The stains are not dirt, so scrubbing harder usually does not help. Dissolving the minerals does.

Start with the sinks. For a stainless steel or porcelain sink, make a paste of baking soda and a little water, spread it over the stained area, and let it sit for ten to fifteen minutes. Wipe with a soft cloth or a non-scratch sponge, then rinse. For stubborn spots around the drain or faucet base, lay a cloth soaked in plain white vinegar over the area for ten minutes first, then follow with the baking soda paste. Never use steel wool or abrasive pads on chrome or brushed finishes — they leave scratches that catch even more mineral buildup.

Faucets and showerheads need a soak, not a scrub. Unscrew a faucet aerator if you can and soak it in vinegar for about thirty minutes, then rinse and brush away the loosened scale with an old toothbrush. For a fixed showerhead, fill a sturdy plastic bag with vinegar, tie it around the showerhead so the nozzles are submerged, and leave it overnight. In the morning, remove the bag, run the shower for a minute, and wipe the face clean. If water pressure improves, that is the mineral scale clearing out.

Shower doors and tile are where hard water shows most. After each shower, a quick squeegee pass takes about thirty seconds and prevents most new spots from forming. For existing cloudy film, spray vinegar on the glass, let it sit for ten minutes, wipe, and rinse. On grout lines, the baking soda paste works well — apply it, let it sit, and scrub gently with a grout brush. Keep the bathroom fan running during and after showers so surfaces dry faster and spots have less chance to set.

A few habits keep the problem small. Wipe faucets dry after use when you can, fix slow drips promptly because a constant drip deposits minerals in one spot all day, and avoid letting soapy water dry on fixtures. If buildup is thick, layered, or etched into the finish, stop before you damage the surface — a professional clean can handle heavy scale safely.
